I do not drink coffee. Ever. I just never developed the taste for it.
This morning, Iâm giving it another try. If I donât get myself woken up, Iâll never survive my shift at work and then at Evieâs baking tonight.
âWhatâs in the cup?â Maggie pops the âpâ on cup and I know sheâs digging for information. I never bring a morning beverage with me to work, so sheâs right to be suspicious. The thing is, I didnât tell her I was having dinner with Fisher last night, so I could potentially lie about why Iâm so tired. Sheâd have to believe me.
One problem, though. I donât lie if I can help it. Itâs a bad habit to get into and just snowballs into oblivion. No, thank you.
âI decided to give coffee a chance. Itâs not as disgusting as I remember it being, but it could be because I added about nine packets of sugar and filled the mug halfway with milk,â I say.
Itâs not a lie. I really did put that much crap in the cup. I just donât tell her Fisher made me try his cup of black coffee which is what prompted the need for so much extra.
âGross,â she says, wrinkling her nose. âYouâre going to be more wired and crash from the sugar than you would from any caffeine.â
âYeah, well I needed something to wake me up. It was a late night,â I say.
I could hear a pin drop with how quiet the room is suddenly.
âI was business planning and trying to come up with a marketing strategy,â I say.
Again, not a lie. After all the amazing kissing last night, Fisher and I did so much more talking. Honestly, I was surprised when we didnât run out of things to talk about between his family, my families, both our business aspirations, favorite foods, movies, places we want to visit. Itâs been so long since I cared to date anyone, I forgot how much I love learning about another human being. More than that, I think I really, truly enjoyed how much he was interested in learning about me. We lost track of time and forgot to sleep, which sounds insane, but we were still talking when the sun was coming up. I didnât go back to my apartment until the time Iâm normally waking up in the morning, and that was only to shower and put on clean clothes for work.
âMust have been quite the brainstorm session,â Maggie says, interrupting my thoughts. âI mean, you were working so hard you even have bruises from it.â
Instinctively, I touch my neck. She starts laughing at me when I let out a low groan.
âI have makeup. Itâs not bad. We should be able to cover it up.â She presses her lips together, and reaches into her bag for a small makeup kit. âYou know you didnât have to fib.â
âI wasnât fibbing. We really were talking about business stuff a lot of the night,â I say, sheepishly. âPart of me doesnât want to get my hopes up that itâs going to turn into more than a few dates.
